International Yoga Day celebrations started due to India's initiative. PM Narendra Modi said to the General Assembly of United Nations to celebrate Yoga Day on September 27, 2014 around the world. The General Assembly of United Nations had announced its event within just three months after the proposal arrived.





The General Assembly announced on 11 December 2014 that 21st day of June will be celebrated as Yoga Day in the world. After which people from all over the world celebrate 21 June every year as International Yoga Day.



Why International Yoga Day is Celebrated on 21 June



June 21 is the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere, which can also be called Summer Sankranti. From the perspective of Indian culture, after the summer solstice, the sun turns southward and this time is very beneficial in achieving spiritual accomplishments. On this day the sun rises fast and the sunset happens in late. That's why the 21st day of June was set to celebrate International Yoga Day.




India had made the first international Yoga Day record


On June 21, 2015, the first International Yoga Day was celebrated, in which over 35 thousand people and representatives from 84 countries under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi had made 21 postures of yoga on Delhi's Rajpath. This ceremony received two Guinness Records The first record is 35,985 people with the biggest yoga class and the second record is to participate in this event by the 84 countries.
